Photography Lighting Kits, Which Type is Best For Me? by David Neargardner

As many photographers know, the proper use of an external photography lighting source in studio or outdoors can greatly improve the quality of your photographic image results. When it comes to the utilization of photography lighting kits as a high quality light source. Photographers have two distinct types to choose from for photographic, video or product lighting. Flash or strobe and continuous lighting. In this article we will explore some of the fundamental differences between them to give photographers perhaps a better idea of what type of lighting would suit there individual preferences the best.

Flash Photography Lighting Kits

Flash lighting in photography is often used by professionals or advanced photographers for it's ability to generate bursts of timed light at 5600 Kelvin. This specific lighting temperature is the optimal temperature in photographic or product image production to simulate natural sunlight in photography. To utilize flash lighting, synchronizing a professional camera with the flash lights for proper timing is necessary for them to operate together via a synch chord. Most flash lighting kits have slave sensors on each flash light so only one flash light needs to be synchronized with the camera, than that timing is wirelessly transmitted to all other flash lights in the kit so they will all flash in unison with the camera's shutter.

Halogen Photography Lighting Kits

Continuous lighting in photography is much simpler to operate for photographers than flash lighting. With halogen photo lighting kits, the photographer can simply turn them on and they will have a constant source of warm, high quality lighting for as long as they need. Continuous lighting is used for photographs, product shots, and can be used for video production as well. Halogen or tungsten lighting burns brightly and also can create a great deal of heat while doing so in a confined studio or area. Hot lights is a common reference for halogen or tungsten lighting for this very reason. Halogen continuous lighting also uses more electricity than other photo lights and have been synonymous with studio lighting for a very long time. They are not as popular as they once were because they are no longer viewed as practical or economical because of the amount of heat they produce and the electricity they consume.

Fluorescent Photography Lighting Kits

Fluorescent continuous lighting has become a popular and modern alternative for photographers to be able to generate this type of constant high quality light source without the drawbacks of halogen. Fluorescent photography lighting kits are virtually cool to the touch and produce no heat. They also require a lot less electricity to operate than halogen does which makes them very practical and also economical for photographers. Fluorescent photography bulbs with a life rating of 10,000 hours last much longer than halogen photography bulbs. Fluorescent lighting is used extensively for photographs, product shots and video production and come in both standard non adjustable wattage kits and adjustable wattage lighting kits.
